The annual Draft Horse Farm Pull of the Owingsville Horse Show was held
on Friday evening, July 7th,2017 at the Owingsville Lions Club Fairgrounds. The event was hosted by the Eastern Kentucky Draft Horse and Mule Association.
There was a threat of some severe weather in the area, but the skies looked fine when the pull began. There were only 5 teams on hand for the pull this year.
We suspect that some of the contestants were scared off by the weather forcast. Of the 5 teams on hand, 3 of them were owned and driven by members of the Orme
Family from Mt Sterling, Kentucky. About the other two teams; one was owned by Robert Williams from Ohio and the other team belonged to the famiy of Ryland Moore
from Virginia. Mike Downs acted as the announcer during this event and he announced that an anonymous donor had contributed some sponsorship money in memory
of Walter Corbin who had passed away earlier this year. Walter had always been a big supporter of this event and Mike annnounced that the pull was being dedicated
to his memory. Walter had been married to Sandy Orme who was sitting ringside with members of her family. She was there rooting on her brothers and her father.
For some unknown reason, the sled was pulling awful hard and the winning weight of 7,000 poundss was well below the weights achieved by pullers in past events
at this location. The eventual winner was Mike Orme who bested his brother Charlie and his father Charles in a three way pull off at the 7,000 pound weight.
It seemed fitting that a member of the Orme family should win an event dedicated to the memory of his brother-in-law. Ironically, the heavens opened up
just about the time that the event ended and the rains came down quite hard. Fortunately, the contest had been decided by that time. By the way, do you think
there will be any discussion about this year's event over in the barn at the Orme Family Farm?
